Let’s emulate Singapore

EDITOR — This is in reference to Lovemore Mukono’s article in last week’s paper on whether we have a shared national vision at all as Zimbabweans. In my view a vision is the “what” it is that we desire as a nation, while goals are the “how” we can achieve that vision.
For instance, some time ago the vision for Singapore was that the average citizen would earn as much as the average American by year 2010.
To achieve this, one goal was for this tiny country to become the most significant trading hub in South-East Asia.
A game-changer was to build the world’s most advanced container port. Today, that ambitious long-term vision has been abandoned. Why? Last year, the median household income in America was US$51 000 per annum, while in Singapore it was over US$66 000.
Of course, another goal Singapore still has is zero tolerance to corruption.
