I AM writing to urge the City Fathers to address the issue of toilets at all public places in Greater Harare. It has become a norm in the central business district to see long queues at public toilets. Sometimes men and women will enter the same toilet. Many times you get to a toilet and the door is locked and sewage frothing outside. Or if a toilet is open, there will be a notice saying: ‘Urinary Only’ or ‘There is no water.’
The city council must have a budget to take care of public toilets rather than spending money on luxurious vehicles as this affects the overall health of the city. It’s even more shocking that the new kombi terminus along Coventry Road at the outskirts of the city is now complete but there are no abolition facilities. What will commuters and transport operators use? For such a public space that will attract huge volumes of people, one would expect that the city council would have considered toilets in their planning.
